Someone's going to make a killing in the name of Christmas

So you've already probably seen this by now - yes, over 345,000 people (probably way more than that by the time I've finished typing this) are intent on stopping whichever X-Factor puppet wins this year from scoring the default Christmas number one, by buying Rage Against The Machine's Killing in the Name on Sunday. Sounds pretty funny, particularly since the song contains about 16 'fuck's. Apparently some people seem to think this is some kind of subversive stand-up-to-the-man statement but it is worth remembering that Cowell and RATM both ultimately bring in the money for Sony Music Entertainment anyway, so they'll be laughing all the way to the bank whatever happens. (And the guys who started this have been very open that the point is that they just like the RATM song... simple as that.)

I guess I'd rather see RATM at #1 than some X-Factor arse but that's just personal taste, particularly because the song was mixed by the mighty Andy Wallace (join this group instead!... and check out the beard), who is a huge influence on this band.

To me, what's pretty cool about this whole thing is that with downloadable music you can now choose a song, no matter when or where it was originally released, to count towards that week's charts. Imagine that a few years ago - you couldn't walk into HMV and buy a 17-year-old rap metal single and hope it would make a dent, as it wouldn't be there to buy!

Over on Facebook, the Rage group is now almost up to 365,000...
