So it went pretty well

...Friday's rehearsal was a lot of fun, and actually a lot more productive than we thought it probably would be. It was our first foray for a while into the world of metronomes and using programmed backings, but was great to bring some of the extra effects and instruments from the recordings brought into the live room.

In order to make it work, you need a drummer who can guide the rest of the band through in time to the backing (as only they hear the metronome) so everything comes together when it should and it doesn't sound like an unholy bloody mess. Pleased to say Grant did an excellent job of keeping us where we should be.

Recording update

Ross, Steve and I met up on Friday evening to continue the slow but sure progress on the album. We have decided on the next song to be completed, and Steve re-did his draft parts that we had in place. We hope to get this next one – called Green Scenery – out within the month. It might be a tall order as we've become rather perfectionist about these new songs, but we do want to push ahead and get them out for all of you to hear.

Thank you for watching

Ive had some great feedback from a few folks on the facebook group about the new video for All The Wasted Hours, I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and it's always great to hear any thoughts on what we're up to! The video was a bit of an experiment really, it might not notice to most viewers (except for Moog) but I tried out a new way of shooting, this time using glass lenses on the camera, instead of the usual video lens. Its a bit of a convoluted process as I built an adapter to enable me to shoot through stills photography lenses to achieve this, it makes a great image but meant we had to shoot the whole thing upside down and back to front in the viewfinder! All a bit weird. Read more »

We're very pleased to announce the release of a brand new song and accompanying video today! "All the Wasted Hours" is available as a 192 kbps, free mp3 download from the bonus section (or, if you're already logged in, you'll find it on the front page). The video is embedded below this post.

This song took shape over the last year, and you can hear how it's evolved into its final form by comparing it with the first rehearsal room run-through (audio of that is also in the bonus section). You will need to register with the site to access the download, but the song is also streamable from our Facebook page (if you're reading this on the FB page - the song's in the audio player!). Filling in the gaps

citizenpaul's picture

Have just returned from rehearsal. We spent the 3 hours stitching together the disparate bits and pieces of a new song that was begun last year some time... it was a difficult one that contains some really good riffs and chord progressions that we couldn't bring ourselves to throw away. Sometimes songs just come together without too much soul-searching; oftentimes, however, they need lots of persevering. So it was really satisifying tonight to be able to come up with some new little sections to stitch all the bits together, and it was a good joint effort.

This week I have been mostly...

  • Playing around with this nice bit of software that is designed to stop you doing a 'Death Magnetic' on your mixes - the TT Dynamic Range Meter. It's free to use so if you record your own music you should check it out... see how easy it is to rob all your hard earned work of its dynamics!
  • Trying out some of the mix techniques invented (?) by Michael Brauer - who has an interesting but pretty complex way to give everything in your mix the space it deserves.

New video shoot

We shot a video for new song 'All The Wasted Hours' the other night. It was a lot of fun and will be up here for you to see very soon!

Still got it

On Wednesday, Ross and I attended Faith No More's first gig in something like 12 years! As long-term fans of the band, who are a big influence on ACAS it was a real treat to behold. I'm so please Mike Patton was fully into the show and gave it his all - I'm sure they all still hate each other and are in it only for the money, but you certainly wouldn't know it to watch. More or less the whole show is up on YouTube already, along with yesterday's Download headliner slot. We didn't get to see Ashes to Ashes at Brixton, but they did it last night: Read more »
